Tapichalaca Nature Reserve is located southeast of the Podocarpus National Park, 75 km south of the city of Loja on the road connecting the towns of Yangana with Valladolid. It covers approximately 2000 acres and an elevation ranging from 2000m to 3400 m, includes areas of primary rain forest to high Andean forest, scrub and heath. There are also areas involved and regenerating forest. Tapichalaca has a great diversity of flora, more than 192 species of plants, making it a lovely place for tourists and foreign nationals.

Information of Tapichalaca Nature Reserve

Tapichalaca Nature Reserve was created to preserve and protect natural resources for scientific research and sustainable development through ecotourism.

The reserve is formed by a wet temperate montane forest, protects an area established for the conservation and bird watching, especially the Jocotoco Antpitta (Ridgelvi Grallaria). This area is considered a global bird center for the large number of birds can be seen, some of them endemic.

Tapichalaca also has a great variety of flora, here are 192 species of plants, including major plants are the Puya incrassatum Brachyothum cuevae and located on the moor and Bomarea longipes, which are part of new species endemic to the area.

There are also 17 species of hummingbirds, including the Hummingbird Picoespina, endemic to the region and is in danger of extinction.

One of the most beautiful plants of the reserve is Bomarea, which was discovered by Edouard André in 1875 and was reborn in 2004 with her amazing beauty to thousands of tourists in the Reserve Tapichalaca.

Another of the plants that are part of the main attractions of the reserve are Orchids, with their extraordinary shapes and bright colors captivate visitors, especially between the months of December and March when they bloom most of the 43 species recorded.

Tapichalaca Nature Reserve also has trails that allow access to areas of interest is advisable to use the stalks and Jocotoco Quebrada Honda, the biodiversity around them.
