San Diego Convent Museum, Quito

The San Diego Convent Museum, located in Quito historical center, keep key parts of the cultural life of Quito. The order of the Franciscans built this church to provide for their religious a retreat 1599. In the corridors saved precious paintings with allegories to the passion of Christ, the Assumption of Mary dating from the seventeenth century, which were covered with lime for years and now are being restored.

Information of San Diego Convent Museum

In San Diego ran the Recoleta of the Franciscan fathers from the late sixteenth century. In the seventeenth century, lived in this place of gathering the Friar Manuel Almeida. According to legend, the paintings and the crucifix of the convent was used by Father Almeida as a ladder to get out of their evening parties.

San Diego retains the strength of its walls and stone columns of the seventeenth century. Are connected by inner courtyards with arches formed by galleries on the ground floor and enclosed porches on the upper floors, the upper corridors are illuminated with teatinas and skylight. Downstairs the walls are almost entirely of adobe. On the upper floor the structure is of wood and adobe which is a mixture of reeds and mud. The ceilings are made of reeds, and mud suro.

The religious complex of San Diego offers visitors one of the most comprehensive tours by a colonial building, with works that have the talent of the Quito School, as the visitor has the chance to visit the sacristy, the church, the chapel exterior the charnel house behind the church, four yards of the convent refectory, the cells of the religious, bell tower and the Profundis hall refectory is another extraordinary work, with fine mural paintings on wood and a simple but charming stone frame. In the refectory we admire a representation of the Last Supper of Quito artist Miguel de Santiago, in which the dish in front of Jesus Christ contains cuy, a traditional Andean preparation.
