Riobamba Ecuador, Chimborazo Forest Reserve

The Chimborazo Faunal Production Reserve was created on October 26, 1987 and is located between the provinces of Chimborazo, Tungurahua and Bolivar. Has an area of 58 560 hectares, with altitudes ranging between 3,800 to 6310 meters above sea level. This reserve contains large areas of grassland, among which is a playful chase rabbits.

Information of Chimborazo Forest Reserve

The primary objective of its declaration as a Wildlife Reserve is supporting the development of the 38 farming communities living inside as well as test the reintroduction of llamas, vicuna and alpaca. Another objective is the need to protect the heath chimboracense and support scientific research.

The reserve is protected by two giants: the Chimborazo (6310 m), considered the highest snow Ecuador, and its neighbor, the Carihuairazo (5020 m). Surrounded by the majestic Andean landscape and rugged moorlands.

Covered by bushes, tree species valuable for conservation, as well as you can see trees and bushes of rosemary, mortiño, chuquiraguas, GIS and occasionally pumamaquis, piquiles, and more species native to the Andes.

There are two shelters available for mountain climbers. The first is at 4800 meters above sea level which is reached by car, the second at 5000 meters and can only be reached on foot.

In addition you can perform various activities such as guided walks around the area and mountain landscapes. Also in the reserve there are a few routes for mountain biking, especially those descended from the refuge of the volcano to the villages of San Juan Urbina.
