Cathedral of Riobamba

Riobamba Cathedral is a historical relic of the city, located on the side of the park Pedro Vicente Maldonado. Its façade is baroque style is, its elements were rescued from the rubble of the old Riobamba, destroyed in the earthquake of 1797. Built in white limestone contains reliefs that are present in the aboriginal and Spanish expressions, scenes from the Old and New Testaments and religious iconography.

Aesthetic and architectural elements of the Cathedral of Riobamba reveal richness and originality.

In 1810 the pastor of the city of Riobamba Jose Maria Freire, began work on rebuilding the cathedral and was completed in 1835. Over time, the material conditions and lack of maintenance had destroyed the roof and parts of the façade. The Faculty of Architecture at the Universidad Central de Quito, he studied and began the reconstruction plans of the architect riobambeño Carlos Velasco.

Inside the Cathedral you can see a mural of Christ Indigenous artist Oswaldo Viteri Quito, the same was inaugurated on April 22, 1989. You can also see a mural of the Nobel Peace Alfredo Perez Esquivel, painted in 1986 by Bishop Proaño and indigenous pastoral work.
