Information of El Panecillo

The main image of the summit is the Virgen de Legarda, a massive sculpture that is visible from anywhere in the city. The Spanish artist Agustín de la Herran Matorras in 1973, made in aluminum sculpture of the Virgin Mary which is at the top of the hill, is a replica of the sculpture by sculptor Bernardo de Legarda Quito, the same that rests on the altar the church of San Francisco.

LThe sculpture is composed of seven thousand different pieces, was built in 1976 and is considered the masterpiece of sculpture in colonial Quito school.

This wonderful work rests on a basis of four-level building, built in concrete and covered with volcanic rock, inside is a small museum which tells the story of the ancient hill and sculpture. It also has a viewpoint located at the foot of the Virgin, from which it has an excellent view of the city of Quito.

The hill of Panecillo still preserves the legacy of the Inca empire, because there is the Pot of Bread, a kind of circular tank eight feet deep that was used to irrigate crops. It is also a reference to Quito because it marks the division between the south and center of the city.
