The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve is located northeast of the Amazon region of Ecuador, in the province of Sucumbios, 78 km from Nueva Loja. It is one of the most biodiverse on the planet with the Yasuni. It lies between the basins of the rivers San Miguel and Aguarico, extends over an area of 655 781 hectares. One of its main objectives of the reserve is to conserve, in perpetuity, of a sample of the Amazon ecosystem, the more complex the world.
The reserve is named after one of the rivers running through it, was established on July 26, 1979 as a site established for the conservation of natural resources, cultural values, ethnic, scientific research, recreation and tourism activities.
The Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve has enormous biological value for harboring unique ecosystems which in turn provide habitat for a wide range of organisms from plants, fungi and vertebrates and invertebrates, and cultural, to be the cradle of ancient cultures Amazon.
It covers a large area of tropical rainforest flood, associated with complex lake systems, among which those of Cuyabeno and Alligator rivers. Here live many species of fish, reptiles and aquatic mammals like the manatee and the pink dolphins.

The Cuyabeno Reserve is home to one of the largest concentrations of wildlife, both flora and fauna. It has over 550 different species of birds: 60 species of orchids, over 350 species of fish, a variety of reptiles such as anacondas, caimans and river turtles. It is estimated that 12 000 plant species found within the reserve. And many species of mammals, including the incredible Tapir (Tapirus terrestris).
The Cuyabeno Reserve is one of the most important tourist destinations of Ecuador.
