Loja Ecuador, Podocarpus National Park

It is a protected area, located south of Ecuador, between the provinces of Loja and Zamora, has an area of 146 280 hectares. Its name comes from the characteristic tree of montane rain forest, the Romerillo or Podocarpus, the only genus of conifers of Ecuador. Was launched on December 15, 1982, due to the priority of conservation of flora and fauna of the region, consisting of numerous endemic species and other endangered species. Information of Podocarpus National Park

Podocarpus National Park stands out as one of the richest in the world, which houses within its limits a variety of ecological zones and ecosystems.

In the park you can find a great variety of landscape and habitat leads to high biodiversity of flora and fauna, while representing a regional reference for its hydrological functions and attractive for recreation and eco-tourism.

Podocarpus National Park has 560 species of birds including 60 species of hummingbirds are the cock of the rock, parrots, toucans, and Jocotoco Tangare. It is also a refuge for endangered species such as jaguar, puma, mountain tapir and the spectacled bear.

The native vegetation of this area, lush and varied, so the National Park is considered Poducarpus Botanical Garden of America. He has more than 4000 species of plants, including trees stand that can measure up to 40 meters height and rosemary, which is named after the park and many other valuable as the husk, called the national tree of Ecuador and an infinite variety of orchids.

Podocarpus offers tourists walks and educational tours self-guided trails, the shortest path is the spectacled bear, whose journey takes 15 min. approx. For cloud forest trail need half an hour on these roads are the most varied samples of flora and fauna of the park. If you want to enjoy a wonderful view of Loja and surrounding trail you take the Mirador, travel time is 1 hour 20 min. returning the same way and 3 hours to complete the return to the path.
