Information of Cathedral

The first church in the city was built of stone and adobe in the sixteenth century. The present church began its construction in 1838, according to Monsignor Manuel Aguirre Br first Apostolic Administrator Bishop Years later he made considerable improvements in the front making Cathedrals in one of the largest in Ecuador. Being the Mother Church, here is received every August 20 the image of the Virgin of the Swan, which is brought in procession from the Basilica of El Cisne located in the parish of the same name 70 kilometers from the city of Loja Loja and arrives to preside over religious festivals and trade in September, staying until the 1st. November day that is returned to his permanent place of worship.

The image of the Virgen del Cisne was carved by the Spanish sculptor Diego de Robles under the guidance of Bishop Luis Lopez Solis in 1594. Since 1595, The Swan is a landmark of the Catholic religion.
