Latacunga Ecuador, Limpiopungo Lagoon

Located north-west of Cotopaxi, at 3,800 meters above sea level, on the road that goes to the Jose Rivas refuge, its unique beauty captivates those who have the opportunity to visit this sector. Its clear but frigid waters are surrounded by small mountains and hills. It has a magnificent view to the picture in a frame of elevations such as Cotopaxi, the Sincholagua and Rumiñahui. Information of Limpiopungo Lagoon

Limpiopungo Lagoon is 20 km. the city of Latacunga, in the way I saw was beautiful scenery and flora changes considerably high, as it ascends. From the lake also can see the silhouette of the volcano Cotopaxi.

Of possible glacial origin with 200 ha, Limpiopungo Lagoon is situated in a deep valley in the Cotopaxi National Park. It is a serene lagoon, dark and calm, reflecting the powerful volcano Rumiñahui.

It has a relatively dry climate, which together with very sandy soil permeability, vegetation give an appearance of puna1S. On the banks of the pond there are plants such as grasses, climbers flower, cherry tree, rosemary moor, puliza, pisag and other shrubs that give life to this place. It is also possible to observe the flora changes considerably high, as it rises.

Limpiopungo Around 24 species have been reported in waterfowl and wading birds, including 15 migrant and very rare in the country, the mandolin (Black-faced Ibis), which is not known whether a resident and of which only 100 individuals or less remaining . On the road you can see flocks of llamas and some other species.

Also in the area of Lake Limpiopungo should highlight the presence of two endangered species in Ecuador: the Andean condor and Theristicus branickii.

Limpiopungo Lagoon is ideal for nature tourism, here you can perform various activities such as hiking and horseback riding, enjoying the flora and fauna.
