San Cristobal Island, Galapagos Ecuador

It is the second easternmost island in the archipelago, also known as Chatham. It is the capital of the province of Galapagos, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, located southwest of the island. Here are the administration offices and the best shipping port, as well as one of the two airports on the Galapagos Islands. Information of San Cristobal Island

San Cristobal Island has a total area of 55.8 thousand hectares or 558 km2, of which 85% is National Park area and the rest belongs to the urban and rural areas. His name is in honor of Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon).

It is one of the five inhabited islands of the archipelago, occupying second place in the human population after Santa Cruz. Also one of the oldest in the geological formation.

It has beautiful beaches and coral seashell white, blue waters of which reveals much of the wonderful species that dwell in the archipelago. Among them is looming large colorful birds and sea lions.

SIt is characterized by eroded volcanic peaks in the northern part of the island, which are sparsely populated with vegetation, and having lots of vegetation to the south.

San Cristobal is home to several species is endemic wildlife. The island is inhabited by frigates, sea lions, giant tortoises and Galapagos, blue-footed boobies and red-footed boobies, tropical birds, marine iguanas, dolphins, swallow-tailed gulls. The vegetation includes Calandrina galapagos, Lecocarpus darwinii, trees such as Lignum vitae, Matazarna.

It has spectacular scenery, the island has the only freshwater lake in the Galapagos. El Junco found in the highlands about 700 meters above sea level. It is a crater 6 feet deep, surrounded by trees and fern endemic, is the perfect place for birdwatching.

San Cristobal Island offers tourists a unique view of the bay. Also impressive attractions such as the Sleeping Lion, where we will see a huge colony of sea lions and blue-footed boobies. In Punta Pitt, one can see three species of boobies. Another place frequented by tourists is the area inhabited by the famous Galapagos giant tortoise calls.
