Genovesa Island Galapagos, Prince Philips Steps

The Prince Philip's Steps is located south tip of Genovesa Island a haven for birds. It consists of the remaining edges of a large crater that is now almost completely submerged, which is accessible through a gap from the foot of the volcano. The island attracts large numbers of ocean birds that come to nest and reproduce, including: great frigate birds, blue footed boobies, gulls and petrels frac.

Information of Prince Philips Steps

The site visit Prince Philip's Steps is located in the southern part of Darwin Bay Genovesa Island. The trail is on a plot of the same volcanic rock that has a route of 1.5 km and visit it can be done in about two hours.

The youngest area from the geological point of view of the island is in the area. The cliffs located in the south are composed of very fragile lava. The natural erosion that has occurred in these lava flows has made to become the ideal place for nesting terns storm.

You can see two species of terns that nest in cavities and holes in the lava. One is the wooden petrel feed at night and the other is the Galapagos petrel that has its activity during the day, the latter is endemic, it is estimated that a population of over 200,000 pairs. One of its main predators field is the owl.

The red-footed booby nests only in the outer islands of the archipelago, Punta Pitt, Gardner (Floreana), Wolf, Darwin and Genovesa. It is also present on this island the masked booby.

During the panga rides along the cliffs can be seen fur wolves and several species of seabirds.
