Informa of the Isabela Island

Isabela is a very beautiful island, is the largest of the Galapagos archipelago and is known as the island of volcanoes. Its characteristics have attracted the attention of geologists and foreign scholars have been concerned about the stretch of five active volcanoes and more than 2500 cones scattered across the island.

His place of access is Puerto Villamil. The entrance to the Bay is a bit difficult due to the large amount of rocks on the coast of low cliffs and deep crevices that make navigation difficult, to which we must add a sea always agitated.

Port 20 km lies the town of Santo Tomas (in honor of Berlanga), which is visible near the wall of tears in the camp of the Colonial Penal Germany that existed until 1959.

The island has a population of 864 inhabitants, no drinking water but has water underground springs that end on the shores to the south side of the island.

Its soil is very suitable for agriculture, to the south in the Sierra Negra volcano and Sierra Azul are large tracts of land with natural grass which fed the horses and cattle in the area.

In the interior of the island there are six large volcanic craters: Ecuador, Wolf, Darwin, Alcedo, Sierra Negra and Cerro Azul. The Sierra Negra crater is 10 kilometers in diameter, the second largest in the world.

In Isabela Island 60% percent of all flora and fauna of Galapagos. Here you can find five species of giant tortoises, flamingos, penguins, marine iguanas, sea lions, sharks easily based on the village of Puerto Villamil.

Isabela has spectacular visitor sites, where you can see from the summit of Sierra Negra volcano with fumaroles to the most peaceful beaches, crystal clear water bays and lagoons with rare plants and animals. One can appreciate the amazing changes in vegetation.
