Genovesa Island Galapagos, Darwin Bay

Darwin Bay is formed by a crater, is almost a perfect circle. Located on Genovesa Island, north of the Galapagos Archipelago. Darwin Bay, a place of anchorage, was once a crater that collapsed. This site is excellent for the reproduction of some species of Galapagos such as red-footed boobies, masked boobies, owls, gulls, lava, swallow-tailed gulls, terns and storm marine iguana subspecies of smaller islands.

Información de Bahía Darwin

Darwin Bay is located south of Genovesa Island and was formed by the rupture of a boiler. The crater has about 600 meters wide at the edge and a depth of 60 meters.

Genovesa Island is a small and flat with only 14 km ² and a height of 76 m. The island has a xerophytic vegetation type.

It is the ideal place for ornithologists by the abundance of birds in it, highlighting some species such as swallow-tailed gulls and lava gulls, which are the only ones of their kind to have nocturnal hunting habits.

Darwin Bay Beach is one of the most interesting of Galapagos for nature lovers. It has trail is about 1500 meters. Part of the trail is of coral sand and some is slabs of lava. The fund has a white sandy beach full of sea lions and large birds of different species.

During the tour you can see colonies of nesting common frigate, the Nazca booby, and the swallow-tailed gulls. We also find here footed booby nests of red, making it the largest nesting colony of Galapagos for pelagic bird.

The swallow-tailed gulls feeding at night on squid and fish. Usually nests on cliffs and rocks, but on this site do so on sand to camouflage their eggs with black spots.

You can also find the mockingbirds and finches large cactus peak. The mockingbirds on Genovesa have been studied for their cooperative behavior. As for the cactus finch large peak on this island there are two groups of the same species that differ in their singing. Females are attracted to similar or more chanting their ancestral males, behavior that demonstrates that evolutionary divergence within of the same species.

In Bahia Darwin can dive along the inner wall or outer wall. Another possibility is from the outside of the volcano through the channel in the boiler.
