Corazon Island is a haven of mangroves, located between Bay and San Vicente Caráquez in the Chone River estuary in the province of Manabi. Inside there is a path through the mangroves where native guides interpret the life of the mangrove and its rich biodiversity. It is a community ecotourism project which seeks to educate and preserve mangrove resources through education of its inhabitants and visitors.
Corazon Island has an area of more than 50 hectares, which is one of the largest frigate bird colonies in the Pacific.
It is shaped like a heart inside which ecotourism is a path that facilitates the assessment of the life forms present in the varieties of mangroves and mangrove trees on the island.
Corazon Island is a community ecotourism project through Asomanglar (Tourist Guides Association Native Interpretive Trail Heart Mangrove Island) created in order to manage and ensure the complex of the island in 1999.
In the place of shipment sits a small community that now seeks to educate and preserve mangrove resources through education of residents and visitors. The main activity of this community is fishing.
In 2002 the Heart Island was declared a Wildlife Refuge by the Ministry of Environment. Here is one of the largest colony of frigate birds in the Pacific. This colony has tripled over the past eight years, thanks to reforestation and restoration of the mangroves.
The island is also the habitat of species such as pelicans, white ibis, stilt, grouse, kingfishers and migratory species, housing a total of species recorded over 50 species of birds.
You can also find other species such as iguanas, boa constrictors and a wide variety of crustaceans, molluscs and curious insects.
Corazon Island is covered almost entirely by mangroves, where the red mangrove stands as the most dominant species.
The temperature of the island is averaging between 25 and 28 degrees Celsius. It is the ideal place for observing flora, fauna and the contemplation of beautiful scenery.
