Information of Lima

Lima was founded on January 18, 1535 by the conquistador Francisco Pizarro. Its name comes from Indian word "rimac" (which translated into Castilian means "talkative"). During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries became the most important and powerful metropolis in Latin America, the center of all commercial and cultural activities of the viceroyalty.

Its phenomenal growth is due to concentrated government administration, commerce and finance, and much of the cultural industries and activities in Peru.

Lima is a metropolis in constant growth. Blend of modernity and tradition, the Peruvian capital, is the product of a rich fusion of customs and cultures that reflect the idiosyncrasies of the citizens of the many regions that make up the country.

In the city of Lima there are a variety of great tourist attractions.

One of these main attractions of the city of Lima is the historic center, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1988 because of the historical importance that took the city as capital of the Viceroyalty of Peru during the period of Spanish rule.

It is also known as the "Chessboard of Pizarro" for the distribution of its streets as a chess board, has an important collection of colonial architecture.

Noted for its historic buildings, palaces, churches, mansions and balconies, which until now are kept in perfect condition. As you can see the Historic Center of San Francisco Convent, the Plaza Mayor in conjunction with the XVI century Cathedral, the Basilica and Convent of Santo Domingo or the Palacio de Torre Tagle.

The city is also notable for the large number of museums, featuring the treasures of Lima, the stage of the Viceroyalty. Among the most prominent include the National Museum of Anthropology, Archaeology and History of Peru, the National Museum of Peruvian Culture, the Museo Rafael Larco Herrera Archaeological or Gold Museum, one of the most visited of the city.
